Painting with Oils

Description: This course is for the novice or beginner oil painter. Drawing experience a plus, but not required. You will learn basic color theory concepts and painting techniques used by the old masters. Come with an open mind and you will be surprised by what you can paint.

Paints

  • Titanium White: Suggest largest you can get. [*]
  • Alizarin Crimson (red) [*]
  • Lemon Yellow or Cadmium Yellow (yellow) [*]
  • Cerulean (blue) [*]
  • Ultramarine Blue (blue)
  • Viridian Green (green)
  • Yellow Ochre (yellow earth tone)
  • Burnt Sienna (brown earth tone)
Brushes
[*] - Minimum brushes to start
  • 2-3" cheap bristle brush [*]
  • 1/2" - 3/4" flat: for laying foundation and general painting [*]
  • Saphire #10/0: for fine lines
Miscellaneous
  • Painting Palette: Wood, plastic, or disposable paper palette pad.
  • Thinner: Natural Turpenoid or substitute odorless Turpenoid
  • Storage jar: For used solvent (at least a pint in capacity)
  • Painting Base: Canvas, gessoed paper, canvas board, other prepared base (wood, masonite, etc.)
  • Small containers: Used to hold solvent for thinning paint and cleaning brushes. Good to have a couple.
  • Rags / Paper towels: For removing excess solvent, paint, and general cleanup.

Brushes
  • 1/4" angle brush
  • Various sizes of rounds, flats, brights, and/or filberts.
Palette Knives For painting without a brush. Various styles are available.
Mixing / blending Knives Useful on large quantities of paint. Various styles are available.
Helpful Items and Add-ons
Pencils and eraser For drawing or sketching subject for painting.
Apron / smock / old clothes Oil paint is very hard to remove from clothing. Best to cover up or wear stainable clothes.
Master's Brush cleaner Great to clean your brushes after painting and helps to make your brushes last longer.
Master's hand soap Great for hands and other cleanup.
